In India, mail order sale is not very popular owing to impoverishment and higher illiteracy rate, shortage of successful advertising and standardized goods. Direct marketing is direct mail pieces being transmitted to the clients’ home or business.

Mail order sale means the trade, which is done through post. The purchaser places an order thru post and the traders sends goods to him by post. This system is also called ‘shopping-by- post.’

The purchaser orders the goods of his choice to their traders through post and the seller packs the goods according to the customer requirement and transmits it through value payable post (V.P.P). The mail carrier gives the delivery of products ordered and collects the payments of the same. This payment is sent to the trader.

Sometimes, when the client refuses to take delivery, then the ordered goods are sent back to the seller. The main intention of mail order selling system is to sell the product directly without using any intermediaries.

At the present time, ads are given through TV and customers get the goods and services at their homes via teleshopping. Mail order selling is popular when the products are well-known by brand name and are of uniform quality. It is also accommodative when goods have regular demand by the clients and scattered over wide regions. When goods do not require revelation or special skill in handling and are durable in nature and don’t get spoiled in the course of transit.
